Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) is one of the 100 best universities in the world in a total of six countries (five in 2025). In Germany, FAU even managed to jump into the top 5 in ten subjects (seven in 2024). A total of more than 2000 universities all over the world were evaluated in the ranking.
Global Top Rankings for the Faculty of Engineering
Particularly outstanding: Telecommunication Engineering has achieved Rank 75 worldwide. Other subjects at the Faculty of Engineering are also represented among the top 100:
- Electrical & Electronic Engineering
- Medical Technology
- Energy Science & Engineering
In addition, Automation & Control, Nanoscience & Nanotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, and Materials Science & Engineering secured positions in the global top 150.
Outstanding Results in the National Comparison
At a national level, FAU made it into the top 10 with 17 subjects in 2026. Of particular note for the Faculty of Engineering:
- Rank 1: Telecommunication Engineering (once again leads the nationwide ranking)
- Rank 2: Computer Science & Engineering
- Rank 3: Energy Science & Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, and Chemical Engineering
- Rank 4: Nanoscience & Nanotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, and Automation & Control
- Further top rankings: Metallurgical Engineering (Rank 7) and Mechanical Engineering (Rank 8)
The Shanghai subject ranking, officially known as the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (abbreviation: GRAS), has been published on an annual basis by Shanghai Jiao Tong University since 2009. A total of 57 individual subjects were assessed from the fields of natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences and social sciences on the basis of various indicators. The ranking focuses on research. Indicators taken into consideration include research publications, citations, Nobel prizes and Fields medals. More than 2000 universities from 100 countries were assessed for the ranking in 2026.
