Special features
  • The course cannot be compared with a purely scientific study of chemistry. In addition to the fundamentals of mathematics, chemistry and physics, engineering, in particular process engineering, is taught.
  • For the beginn of the first semester, a mathematics „preparatory“ course will be offered. The course is actually a revision course: within two weeks, the material from the last two school classes will be repeated. Participation is strongly recommended. You can find more information on the website of the Faculty of Engineering.
  • The bachelor’s degree is free of admission restrictions (NC), but you have to pass the so-called basic and orientation examinations (GOP) in the first semesters in order to prove your suitability for the course.
  • At the beginning of each winter semester, an introductory course for the beginners will be organized. You will get the most important information for a good start to your studies. An introductory course organized by the student association take place usually on Friday before the start of the semester. The students will help you to create your timetable and a campus tour will be offered.

Program overview

What is the degree program about?

The degree program Chemical Engineering – Sustainable Chemical Technologies (CEN) focusses on the use of material resources and their conversion while considering sustainability and thereby evaluating possible effects for future generations. Chemical engineers use scientific and mathematical knowledge to arrive at economically efficient, safe and environmentally friendly processes. In particular, the incorporation of the concept of sustainability into the students‘ education is intended to enable the development of efficient solutions to problems along the entire life cycle of a product, e.g. through new processes in chemical production, through energy and raw material savings or through research and development work.

Tasks of chemical engineers include the following:

  • Development of new catalytic processes in the chemical industry
  • Energy and raw material savings in chemical processes
  • Process design in laboratory, pilot plant and industrial scale
  • Plant and apparatus engineering, planning, construction
  • Soil, water and air pollution control

In the first 4 semesters, the basics from the natural sciences (chemistry, mathematics and physics) and from engineering (design theory, thermodynamics) are acquired. In the second semester the focal topic of your studies, sustainability, will be introduced through the module „Sustainable Chemical Process Technology“, preparing you for the consecutive lectures „Sustainable Chemical Technologies 1-3“. In the following semesters, these basics will be applied and deepened in the relevant areas of chemical engineering such as reaction engineering, fluid mechanics, separation processes and simulations. The Bachelor’s thesis (last semester) enables students to learn to solve problems independently in the field of Sustainable Chemical Technologies.

Specialization: Sustainable Chemical Technologies

  • Interest in both technical and scientific problems
  • Interest in getting to know the world and its mathematical and physical relationships
  • Ability to work in a goal-oriented manner, both alone and in a team
  • Enjoy observing and interpreting even complex relationships both experimentally in the laboratory and theoretically using scientific texts
  • Motivation to solve interdisciplinary tasks

  • Excellent results in national and international rankings
  • Over 260 subjects; flexible options and a wide range of opportunities for specialization
  • Close cooperation with industry and research institutions
  • A strong economic region
  • Studying in the midst of the vibrant and diverse metropolitan region Nürnberg
  • Students from all over the world

Graduates of the program are in great demand in research centers, companies in the chemical industry or government agencies. They tackle the following challenges of sustainability in process analysis, process development and optimization, design and construction, and damage and incident analysis.

Fields of activity are for example:

  • Research and development (energetic and feedstock use of biomass that does not compete with food production, material use of CO2, development of new energy sources…)
  • Distribution of the products
  • Management of the company
  • Planning and construction of the plants
  • Quality management
