The Master’s program in Advanced Materials and Processes (MAP) was established twenty years ago as part of the Bavarian Elite Network and has developed from the outset as an internationally oriented and research-focused program that combines content from the fields of materials science, chemical and biological engineering, process engineering, and nanotechnology.

Interdisciplinary and international

Thanks to its strong interdisciplinary nature, the close integration of theory and laboratory practice, and collaborations with industry partners, MAP has achieved high international visibility and recognition over the years. Major projects such as the Cluster of Excellence “Engineering of Advanced Materials” and the Collaborative Research Center SFB1411 (Design of Particulate Products) originated from the close cooperation between the Departments of Materials Science and Chemical and Biological Engineering — cooperation that is also reflected in MAP.

On February 4, 2026, the degree program celebrated its 20th anniversary. The event included a symposium with presentations by various professors involved in the MAP program, covering the program’s historical foundation and initial steps (Prof. Müller, initiator of the MAP program), its current development (Prof. Felfer and Prof. Vogel, MAP Chairs), the significance of the program for the development of FAU (Prof. Peukert, long-standing lecturer in MAP), and the broader importance of international research and the exchange of scientific ideas for both host and guest countries (Prof. Boccaccini). The event concluded with the annual poster session, where MAP students from their third semester presented their mini-projects as part of the celebration.

As of the winter semester 2025/26, MAP exited the Bavarian Elite Network. However, the program will continue to be offered regularly and remains a central component of the international and interdisciplinary programs offered by the Faculty of Engineering.
