The Faculty of Engineering at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) is celebrating a major achievement: the German Research Foundation (DFG) has approved the new Research Training Group 3222 “Human-in-the-Loop Co-Design of human-system interaction (coHu)”.
The Research Training Group investigates userfriendly human-system interfaces with the goal of designing technology that is intuitive, safe, and reliable. To achieve this, coHu combines two key approaches:
- Human-in-the-Loop Design: Users actively test and influence technology in early development phases.
- Co-Design: Joint development of hardware and software by researchers and users.
Three research fields are investigating methods for improved interaction, mutual adaptation between humans and machines, and communication between the two. The focus is on robots in health care, including exoskeletons and surgical robots, where safety and usability are paramount.
Researchers from the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology are carrying out interdisciplinary research using modern equipment and involving an innovative training program for early career researchers.
The spokesperson for the Research Training Group 3222 is Prof. Dr.-Ing. Philipp Beckerle, Chair of Autonomous Systems and Mechatronics at FAU.
