243 million euros for innovative research in the Erlangen-Nuremberg region

In 2021, FAU was awarded almost a quarter of a billion euros in third-party funding. With an increase of more than eight percent, this means FAU, which is the largest university in Northern Bavaria, has once again increased the volume of third-party funding it receives. With almost 88 million euros, the Faculty of Engineering successfully retained first place for third-party funding for research at FAU.

Particularly pleasing: FAU increased its funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG), which is awarded in highly competitive application procedures, by more than 10 percent, meaning that around 38 percent of all third-party funding at the University currently comes from DFG funding. The University also managed to increase its funding from foundations and partners in industry and, at around 72 million euros, this funding amounts to around 30 percent of the total sum.

“The current level of third-party funding makes it clear that research at FAU is able to inspire and convince funding providers – be it large organizations or partners in the business sector and individual donors,” explains FAU President Prof. Dr. Joachim Hornegger. “This third-party funding will help us to further increase our efforts in researching the most pressing issues facing us today – from energy supply in the future and the use of AI in medicine to the importance and development of human rights – and thus once again emphasize the strength in innovation of FAU and the Erlangen-Nuremberg region as a location for research.”

Detailed information on third-party funding can be found on the FAU website “Facts and Figures”.
